Dutch Dragon Boat racing is still alive!
On October 4 the Dutch National Championships were held on the new "Willem Alexander Rowing course" in Zevenhuizen, near Rotterdam. After years of racing the Nationals on the Bosbaan course in Amsterdam, the Dutch Dragon Boat Federation chose a brand-new venue which was built in 2013. Twelve Dutch teams were competing for titles for the 200, 500 and 2000 meter distances.
The Dutch dagonboat clubs gathered together
Reigning champion River Dragons from Gorinchem took victory for the fourth time in a row at the 500 meters. The Grand Final was a close and exciting race, where the two Dutch Dragons teams (NL and DE) –from Zoetermeer- finished just behind River Dragons and took silver and bronze.
On the 200 meter surprisingly the Grand Final had the same finalists as in the 500 meter, but a slightly different end result. Are you ready-attention…GO! All teams pulled their powerful starting strokes, and both Dutch Dragons teams got well ahead. After a mad last sprint of all teams, Alkmaar Dragons pulled between the two. Dutch Dragons (DE) won, Alkmaar Dragons took silver and Dutch Dragons (NL) took the bronze.
For the 2000 meter both Dutch Dragons teams charged to the top spots and raced the fastest times. Dutch Dragons DE won their 9th consecutive national title for the long distance, where Dutch Dragons NL took silver and Alkmaar Dragons completed the top three by winning bronze.
