EDBF Council meeting report

19 February 2011
On February 12th the EBDF Council meeting took place in cold and snowy Kiev. At the meeting the EDBF Board (President, Chairman, Vice-chairmen, Secretary General, Treasurer and Council Representative), five country representatives chosen from the many member countries in the EDBF and the chairholders of the EDBF commissions attended.

What was discussed? The most important change for the paddlers are some changes in the European rules. In the future there have to be only 4 teams in racing class to become European champions. (In the past the minimum number of teams was 6 teams in a racing class for the full championships title and medals to be awarded).

Another decision that is important for the paddlers is the new "sliding scale".If there are only three or less competing teams in a racing class, the sliding scale applies. The last one gets a trophy and the first and second team get gold and silver medals. If there are only two teams in a racing class, one team gets a gold medal and the other one a trophy. If there is only one team in a class the team only gets a trophy. All teams in the competition get certificates confirming their participation and placing, but no team in the sliding scale competition can call themselves European Champion. The idea behind this is to ensure that the quality of the European Championships title is upheld.

There was a review about the last European Nations Championship in Amsterdam 2010 and a preview for the 14th European Club Crew Championships in Kiev this summer. The first bulletin has been sent around and more information can be found on the championship website.

Also the next European Nations Championships scheduled for 2012 in Great Britain was discussed. A site visit to Preston (north of Liverpool & Manchester) is scheduled to take place this weekend and more information will be forthcoming.

Germany also presented a bid for the 15th European Club Crew Championship 2013 in Hamburg. It will be a tough decision for the EDBF members as Poland has also put in a bid intention. The final decision will be in August at the Annual General Assembly (AGA).

Another interesting development within the EDBF and IDBF is the inclusion of small boat racing (10 paddler boats, IDBF model 912). Small boat races are important to support the development of new dragon boat nations and the small boat class will be included in Tampa this summer at the World Nations Championships

Also worldwide dragon boat development was discussed. The IDBF is currently having discussions with the members of Sport Accord´s (formerly GAISF) non-Olympic sports in order to strengthen the position of non-Olympic sports within the international sports world. Sport Accord (formerly GAISF) is an organization for international sport federations and it has more than 100 members. Under Sport Accord membership rules, only one federation can officially represent a sport. The IDBF was officially accepted as the worldwide controlling organization specifically for dragon boat racing when it was admitted to Sport Accord membership in 2007.

With the greatest respect to the lives lost in China, this is a timely reminder to us all. The EDBF recommends to all paddlers, coaches, clubs, Federations and private organisations not to underestimate the basic safety rules of our dragon boat sport. Wearing buoyancy aids can save lives and that when we make choices to go and paddle on the water we must be fully aware of the conditions, whether it be strong river flows or tidal currents and the ability of our crews to handle these conditions. "IF IN DOUBT, DON'T GO OUT!"

Today we have received some very sad news for the dragon boat community worldwide. Somewhere in Southern China seventeen dragon boat paddlers have lost their lives during training. We don’t know who they are, what team they paddle with or what they were training for, but today our thoughts and condolences go out to all their families at this difficult time. On behalf of the EDBF Council and of the dragon boat community of Europe.

Dear All I would like to take the opportunity of the SportAccord Convention 2018, to thank you all for the time and effort you put into submitting a new design proposal for the EDBF logo. Due to the quality of the submissions of which we received 14, it has taken the EDBF Council much longer to make a final decision. There was a number of really good ideas, but they were not always suitable for all mediums of print. From the initial 14, three were finally short listed with the preferred logo finally selected from Capture Design. The handover of ownership and intellectual property of the new EDBF Logo has been signed by the Capture Design Chairman Mr Li Dong and myself in a bi-languages version. The EDBF will release an Honor Certificate to Capture Design as the original designer/creator of the new EDBF Logo and will publish it on the EDBF web site, on the EDBF FB page and on the EDBF Instagram page. Thank you once again to all designers/creators submitting the 14 new logo proposals for the time invested into our sport. Claudio Schermi EDBF President

World Beach Games, a new multisport events in the landscape of the sport. The World Beach Games will be held every two years following the edition being organised by ANOC in San Diego in 2019.
