EDBF Council meeting report

19 February 2011 -
On February 12th the EBDF Council meeting took place in cold and snowy Kiev. At the meeting the EDBF Board (President, Chairman, Vice-chairmen, Secretary General, Treasurer and Council Representative), five country representatives chosen from the many member countries in the EDBF and the chairholders of the EDBF commissions attended.

What was discussed? The most important change for the paddlers are some changes in the European rules. In the future there have to be only 4 teams in racing class to become European champions. (In the past the minimum number of teams was 6 teams in a racing class for the full championships title and medals to be awarded).

Another decision that is important for the paddlers is the new "sliding scale".If there are only three or less competing teams in a racing class, the sliding scale applies. The last one gets a trophy and the first and second team get gold and silver medals. If there are only two teams in a racing class, one team gets a gold medal and the other one a trophy. If there is only one team in a class the team only gets a trophy. All teams in the competition get certificates confirming their participation and placing, but no team in the sliding scale competition can call themselves European Champion. The idea behind this is to ensure that the quality of the European Championships title is upheld.

There was a review about the last European Nations Championship in Amsterdam 2010 and a preview for the 14th European Club Crew Championships in Kiev this summer. The first bulletin has been sent around and more information can be found on the championship website.

Also the next European Nations Championships scheduled for 2012 in Great Britain was discussed. A site visit to Preston (north of Liverpool & Manchester) is scheduled to take place this weekend and more information will be forthcoming.

Germany also presented a bid for the 15th European Club Crew Championship 2013 in Hamburg. It will be a tough decision for the EDBF members as Poland has also put in a bid intention. The final decision will be in August at the Annual General Assembly (AGA).

Another interesting development within the EDBF and IDBF is the inclusion of small boat racing (10 paddler boats, IDBF model 912). Small boat races are important to support the development of new dragon boat nations and the small boat class will be included in Tampa this summer at the World Nations Championships

Also worldwide dragon boat development was discussed. The IDBF is currently having discussions with the members of Sport Accords (formerly GAISF) non-Olympic sports in order to strengthen the position of non-Olympic sports within the international sports world. Sport Accord (formerly GAISF) is an organization for international sport federations and it has more than 100 members. Under Sport Accord membership rules, only one federation can officially represent a sport. The IDBF was officially accepted as the worldwide controlling organization specifically for dragon boat racing when it was admitted to Sport Accord membership in 2007.

At the EDBF Convention in Belgrade we decided to run a competition to design a new logo for the EDBF. We would be most grateful if you would share this message with your dragon boat family as we may have some budding designers out there. Alternatively go to our Facebook page "European Dragon Boat Association" and share our message. All logos are to be submitted to secretary@edbf.org by 31/12/17.

Competition Time! Your chance to win a personalised carbon paddle. The EDBF logo is now 27 years old and is in need for an update. We are therefore asking you the paddler to come up with a new design that will show that our traditional sport is changing into the modern era along with the world of sport itself. Please read the briefing document carefully which can be found here. http://www.edbf.org/news.php?item=238. All logos are to be submitted to secretary@edbf.org by 31/12/17. Get those creative thinking juices flowing!

European Dragon Boat Federation shared Federazione Italiana Dragon Boat's post.
CHRISTMAS CUP - ROME EUR 2017, 17th December. Classic race at the end of the year, this time takes on a different value than usual, because we would like to emphasize how the sport, and in particular the discipline of the Dragon Boat, is proposed as a sample of integration between genders and respect for women. There is no team sport like ours, 22 people in a boat are equivalent to two football teams, but the important element is that men and women compete together in the same crew in the specialties of the Mixed and the Open. Today, violence against women and gender discrimination, unfortunately, is in front of everyone... like other social problems such as "stalking" and cyber bullying. I am convinced that sport can play an important role in this issue, as in many others, and that is why the Italian Dragon Boat Federation, which I am honored to be president, launches this appeal with the collaboration of associations that have always take up this serious phenomenon and invite everyone to participate in the event that will be held at the EUR lake in Rome on Sunday 17 December The races will start at 9.00 am in the lake at the Laghetto facing the Piscina delle Rose At the end of the event, around 1.00 pm, there will be the awards and commemorative ceremonies.
